Snowy Day at Velvet Rocks

February 7, 2008

Here's Oscar who went barefoot as usual, while I depended on my trusty snowshoes.
While visiting my mom at Kendal in New Hampshire, we got our excercise by hiking up the AT from Hanover to Velvet Rocks Shelter. I love this new shelter built last year with Japanese-style timber framing. I got my snow fix - not much of it in southern Connecticut this year.

Wintering with Butterflies

January 2008

On Bob's wishlist - a trip to the refuges in Mexico where millions of monarch butterflies gather from every place east of the Rockies into 12 or so tiny spots in the mountains of Michoacan.

None of our Spanish speaking relatives could spare time to go with us, so we had to manage on our own - a big adventure with Char's 20 words of espanol and Bob's books of instructions. Once we managed to get out of Mexico City, we had a fine time cruising through the country-side and up the mountain roads to Angangueo, from where we visited two of the sanctuaries that are open to visitors.
